A day after sipping a non-alcoholic beer to further the cause of easing racial tensions, Vice President Joe Biden told the Urban League's national convention here Friday that minority-owned businesses need to grab their share of the $870 billion recovery program dollars.
"Twenty percent of all recovery act small-business loans and guarantees have gone to minority-owned businesses -- nobody knows about that," Biden told the crowd at McCormick Place.
"Today's news is a glimmer of hope we're putting the brakes on the recession, we're lifting ourselves out of the black hole," Biden said. "Housing starts are up this month. ... We're beginning to move in the direction we have to."
Biden said he had ordered all Cabinet members to draw up concrete plans to reach out to minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses to get them their share of the recovery dollars.
