EVENT: Harlan High School 50th Anniversary

Two events which concerns this.

First on August 22 from 12 Noon to 7 PM, there will be an ALL-CLASS picnic (there's a Facebook invite here) in the Whistler Forest Preserve at 134th & Halsted. There is a request for donations of $4 per alumni and this will not apply to any guests alumni may bring.

BTW, this appears to be spearheaded by the Harlan Alumni Ning group, if you still wish to join you may go here @ http://harlanhighschool.ning.com/

Second, next month, there will be a 50 Year reunion in celebration of 50 years of Harlan High School (Harlan was first opened in 1958). Here is an event posting at the Harlan Alumni Ning & from the Harlan Alumni Association (a PDF file).

So far there isn't a lot of details however there will be an event at Harlan High School on Friday, September 25, 2009. The only detail that exists mentions that there is a need for 100 Alumni to stand on the stage at Harlan's Auditorium to meet with students. There is also supposed to be an Old School Jazz Festival from 7 PM to 10 PM.

Also on September 26, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency at McCormick Place @ 2233 South King Drive there will be a black tie dinner dance from 5 PM to 12 Midnight. There is no information as for costs, but there is some contact information contained on the event page and the flyer if you seek more information.

BTW, just to instill some pride, I found this article from the Harlan in the News Page from the old Harlan Website.

You can read the write-up here from WLS-TV!

This is a year old video and I've been looking for an excuse to post this video. It features the school's Principal, Reginald Evans and it revolved around issues of violence involving public school students. I just gotta like this line!
With its reputation as a debating powerhouse and a claim to have the most graduates on the Cook County bench, Harlan has the kind of pride that a city craves.

John Steele is sitting on the state Appellate Court. He also used to be Alderman of the 6th Ward succeeding the late Mayor Eugene Sawyer. You know I need to find that article from the Daily Law Bulletin.

Anyway events for Harlan Alumni and some Harlan history.
