Annual “Souls of Black Folk” Oratorical Contest - Feb. 27th

This picture was taken from the 2009 Oratorical Contest at Harlan Community Academy with special guest Sen. Roland Burris who was recently installed at that time to President Obama's former US Senate seat!

This year's edition will be held at Harlan on Saturday, February 27th @ 9652 S. Michigan Avenue betwee 12 Noon to 4:00 PM.

In fact there is a write-up in the Alderman's newsletter from January:
6th Ward Alderman Freddrenna M. Lyle and Lyle for Kids invites students who attend school in the 6th Ward and/or live in the 6th Ward to participate in the annual “Souls of Black Folk” Oratorical Contest. Applications will be accepted from students grades Kindergarten-12th. Students are expected to recite an original poem, short story or a published piece from memory. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners. Each participant will receive a certificate and Goody Bag.

Anyone out there interested in going? I might attempt to make this one. Let's see what our young people can do on stage! At that get to see the NEW Harlan Community Academy!
