What is Riff Raft and is our community full of it?

I'm taking this question from the ultra intelligent individuals at CAPCC. The question CAPCC asked is "What do we do about getting the riff-raft out of Chatham? ". Well I know the term is loosely so I asked for a definition and they defined it for me.

The definition CAPCC gave is "Riff-raft is police-involved, court-involved, formerly incarcerated youth and young adults, 16-39 who do damage to public and private property and residents of the neighborhood, usually with no conscience, care or shame."

So I ask my fellow residents do you agree?

  1. Hmm whoever it was who brought in the idea of bringing in the National Guard. Man what can I say? I'm glad the CAPCC blogger came in and said we just need to meet our neighbors.

Of course I really would like to know about these rift-rafts!

  5. A quick anecdote...when my wife & i were first moving in, we introduced ourselves to our next door neighbor. I explained that I worked with inner city youth ministries.

The first words out of her mouth were "We don't like riff raff around here."

Did we look like riff raff? No.

Had we heard that before we signed the papers, we might have thought twice and considered moving elsewhere, as it seemed like that comment was directed toward us.

We really need to have anetwork of services so people moving in, if they have a need, canget it filled, rather than become "riff raff".

  6. Well we need to come to terms with our problems in our neighborhood. The "riff raft" belong to someone, whether a mother, grandmother, aunt, etc who are decent hardworking law abiding individuals and families. While the recent crimes to make the paper would give the impression people are coming here to do their crimes, most of the petty crimes are done by those who live in the community.

I wish we could have and get this level of concern directed toward legislators who sat and let agencies whp address these issues get their funding cut. Lets call these legislators nd stop wasting time stereotyping individuals.
