Cops kill cougar on North Side

This story from the Tribune reminds me of some of the critters I've seen in my general neighborhood. Thankfully I've never seen a cougar or a coyote (one that was found downtown last summer), but I have seen at least a rabbit and a possum. Squirrels are pretty common in our area at least. Possums and rabbits are rare however though they are out there.

Could this be a sign that wild animals might like the idea of urban living even though most of us in general are probably not used to having wild animals especially one like a cougar in our midst? Who knows? Well the animals might know but no one can truly read their minds.

The article mentions that a cougar last ran around in Chicago in the 19th Century. Where have they been for the last 100+ years.

  1. Increasing construction of homes on former farm and forest land is displacing wildlife all over the country. Moose are seen in the streets of New England cities. Foxes and coyotes appear in suburbs and cities. As more of their habitat is destroyed, they wander into unfamiliar territory in search of food, mates, new homes. Migration along rail corridors (freight and commuter rail) is not unusual. This is one of the prices of urban sprawl.
