Anyone looking for a 2023 #Ward06 elections page?

Remapped 6th Ward - adopted May 2022

The map you see above is of a remapped 6th Ward which was adopted in May 2022. This is the ward that candidates for Alderman will be running to represent.

At this moment I don't know if there will be an election page here which will be typical for this blog since 2011. I have shared again publicly the links for all local elections in 2015 and 2019 we covered multiple wards especially in light of the 2011-12 ward remap.

I don't know if there is any interests from the other bloggers here in other wards especially other than wards 6, 9, and 21. As you know there is some turnover as Ward 6 Ald. Roderick Sawyer is running for mayor next year and Ward 21 Ald. Howard Brookins is retiring from the city council. The only incumbent since 2011 that weve covered who's running again next year is Ward 9 Ald. Anthony Beale.

BTW, in shameless self promotion there is a 2023 Elections page over at Ninth Ward Chicago.

If nothing else if you would like to see a separate page here on at least the race to succeed Ald. Sawyer for Ward 6 Alderman feel free to drop a comment and let us know.

Just to let you know right now Worlee Glover at Concerned Citizens of Chatham has a concise list of candidates who want to succeed Ald. Sawyer in Ward 6.

And, yes I need to update with vote totals the 2019 page. Not sure why that didn't happen back then although if you're looking for 2019 results for Ward 9 you can check Ninth Ward Chicago.

2023 Municipal Elections

Did you miss this blog? I've been posting more at another blog I started called Ninth Ward Chicago, I expect to post there for the forseeable future.

Though to be honest I do wonder about JP Paulus' thoughts on Congressman-elect Jonathan Jackson who was elected in the midterm election just last month. He discussed the race to succeed Congressman Bobby Rush of the 1st Congressional District from earlier this summer.

Well now that the gubernatorial and midterm elections are now over, we turn our attention to the municipal races in Chicago. We will be voting for the city council, city clerk, city treasurer, for people to serve on their police district boards, and of course for mayor.

One of the people running for mayor against the vulnerable incumbent Lori Lightfoot is one Ald. Roderick T. Sawyer. In 2011 we covered the race where Sawyer - the son of a former Alderman and Mayor in Eugene Sawyer - was able to defeat incumbent Ward 6 Ald. Freddrenna Lyle in a runoff. Now over a decade later, Sawyer hopes to be another son of a mayor to take the office on city hall's fifth floor.

A channel on YouTube called Next News Network which is a right ring channel takes a look at the mayor's race and quotes Ald. Sawyer who referred to Mayor Lightfoot as thin-skinned. [VIDEO]

Now with Sawyer seeking the mayor's office that means he must give up his seat on the Chicago city council and that means there are man candidates who want to succeed Ald. Sawyer. Worlee Glover at Concerned Citizens of Chicago shared a list of candidates for Ward 6 Alderman in 2023. Of course the deadline to submit petitions for the 2023 elections had passed on Monday and we're headed into the period of petition challenges.

We had one candidate for mayor to drop out in Ward 15 Ald. Ray Lopez who opted to run again for his seat on the city council.

Just to open the discussion here, who would be your preference for mayor next year? Would you give Mayor Lightfoot a second term in the mayor's office?

Also I have to ask about Eddie, he was a frequent commentor during the weirdness of 2020 through 2021. Where are you big guy? Let us know you're OK out there.

BTW, happy holidays to all.

Ward Remap: The People's Map

[VIDEO] I'm a few days late however an independent group the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission created a map for consideration by the Chicago City Council. This report from WGN discusses this proposed map.

A few things to consider and it wasn't much different from the debate in 2011-2012. The Latino community wanted more representation and this map would create a ward designed to elect an Asian-American to the City Council. For that Asian-American they would likely be elected in a ward centered around the Chinatown community.

With this said, I see that Englewood could be one ward which is what R.A.G.E. has often advocated for. How many wards will be drawn to elect Black Aldermen (or is it Alderperson or Alderwomen). The map is a bit different than I'm sure many of us are used to and for the city council itself I'm sure they will debate among themselves how their map for the next 10 years.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot campaign in 2019 for an independent commission to draw a ward map. She welcomes this map reportedly though she's a long way from supporting the map you will see below the People's Map.

The People's Map

Also noted in this report by Tahman Bradley the political reporter for WGN and you might know from the last remap led by Rahm Emanuel. 41 Aldermen must vote in favor of this map, however, if more than 10 Alderman reject this map and propose another this will trigger a special election where Chicago voters will choose a ward map.

I also wanted to add that the Mayor had also supported an elected school board then opposed proposals for an elected school board when it was proposed in Springfield and we ultimately got an elected school board whether or not she actually wanted one. Will she treat a city ward map much different we shall see?

Do you like what you see with the above map?

The population of Chicago grew in the last decade

The city gained 51,000 residents from 2010 to 2020 according to the recent U.S. Census. CapFax shares a number of stories from Chicago area outlets sharing more numbers. Chicago remains America's 3rd largest city, it's not over for us yet!

Now for this remap. The census was controversial for the last ward remap.

Capitol Fax: More than half of Illinoisans are now fully vaccinated

I wanted to share this with you and then a recent story from WGN about the Delta variant that we're sure going to hear a lot more about. One possible way to avoid infection with this coronavirus variant is to get vaccinated and as always I urge you all to ask all the questions you can of a doctor with regards to this vaccine. Especially if you're most at risk - especially pre-existing conditions - for coronavirus.

Here's what CapFax says and perhaps the report itself isn't as shown in an update to the post. Perhaps we're a few days away to getting at least 50% of Illinois' population vaccinated.

And now this recent story about this Delta variant which is the new concern with an uptick of cases. I wish I could say we're out of this pandemic at the same time I can see the media playing up the panic on this. This is why I urge you all to get vaccinated especially if you have any pre-existing conditions. And don't be afriad to ask any questions of a doctor if your vax-hesitant. [VIDEO]

Chicago Tonight: Efforts to Draw New Chicago Ward Map Getting Started

[VIDEO] If you believe Ald. Roberto Maldonaldo the priority of the city council's Latino Caucus is to draw a map that gives the Latino community better representation. Also discussions have already started among members of the City Council to start the process and that the city is also looking to make a purchase of map making software for the city's "maproom". Maldonaldo is also hoping that there won't be the same type of drama that took place during this time a decade ago with previous Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I hope so as well.

Also noted here is an independent commision the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Committee which is working on their own proposal for a new ward map.

Tired of the fireworks?

It seems to be something of a yearly tradition the fireworks started not long before the Fourth of July. I recall last year as the city was undergoing some major riots in downtown Chicago the fireworks were going off that evening near the end of May 2020.

Recently at Concerned Citizens of Chatham, Worlee Glover listed a number of local state legislators to take up the issue of those untaxed Indiana fireworks flowing into the city. What can state gov't do about the issue these fireworks?

WGN: Over 60 arrested after chaos ensues in Chicago's Loop

[VIDEO] I think what was alluded to by these WGN anchors on Monday was the planning and assurance by the Chicago Police there won't be many issues then we hear over 60 people were arrested causing issues in the Loop. We hear about a large crowd (or mob) of unruly young people came downtown setting off fireworks and setting fires in garbage cans.

This seems to be a recurring theme unfortunately. Often we're hearing about large gatherings of young people in downtown Chicago. And sometimes they do cause issues.

Today is the day we're back to normal

I'm sharing the tweets from Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot the state of Illinois is fully reopened and so is the city of Chicago. You still have to wear your mask on CTA regardless of whether or not your vaccinated. And not to confuse you most anywhere else other than on CTA, if you've been vaccinated you don't need your mask.

However as far as "normalcy" we're back to where we were before the pandemic and before the initial mitigations or the stay-at-home order from March 2020. We had a rough year, but we've made it. I don't need to tell you that coronavirus is still out there so it always pays to take your precautions.

Most importantly if you're most at risk for this tricky virus please get vaccinated as it's of no cost to you. Also if you're hesitant always ask questions of a doctor or someone in the healthcare field.

Here's a quick report from WGN [VIDEO]

And here are the tweets. Starting from Mayor Lightfoot

City could go into phase 5 with the rest of the state on June 11

[VIDEO] Main thing is that coronavirus cases are beginning to go down and especially since people are getting vaccinated. Especially those with underlying conditions or elderly who definitely have a need to be vaccinated.

We're currently in the bridge phase in the state which is before phase 5 which is a full re-opening. I'm glad to see things really return to normal after a very difficult year of pandemic restrictions. It had been at the news that Mayor Lightfoot had planned to fully reopen the city next month on the Fourth of July.

One issue noted in this report the city still doesn't have 70% of residents vaccinated. Only 41% have been vaccinated so far.

I was hoping to have some official documentation however the State of Illinois' website is down. :(

What about redistricting?

Just about a decade ago many residents in the 6th Ward especially were very concerned about the ward remap. We did see how the remap went in 2012, this time around who knows when the city will start to redraw the map for the next decade or so.

The state is gearing up as the Democratic House Caucus has created an online site for the public to propose their own maps. The process at least for Springfield might be different this year thanks to the changes in leadership especially in the House of Representatives so this should be interesting. Here's another site for the state Senate Democrats which also experienced a recent change in leadership with the same concept as the state house where the public can draw their own map.

Now we got to find out when the city will begin their ward remap process. While this is really old news since last year with the unprecedented global pandemic there were issues with the census and no doubt that fell behind. The remaps of wards, state legislative and congressional districts all hinge on the data collected from the once every 10 year US census.

h/t Illinois Review

BTW, here's a statement from the US Census Bureau stating all data needed for redistricting should be compiled and released to all states by Sept 21, 2021.

Also here's an update from WTTW, as of March 9, 2021 the city council nor the mayor has backed an independent process to redraw the city's wards so a independent groups have formed a coalition for that purpose.

Could Ald. Michelle Harris be the new IL Democrat Party chairwoman?

Things are changing at a rapid pace right now. First Michael Madigan is no longer speaker of the IL House of Representatives, then just last week he resigns his seat and was able to install his successor an Edward Guerra Kodatt.

Then yesterday Madigan resigns his longtime chairmanship of the state Democrat Party. He's been in that role for over 20 years.

CBS Chicago: Large Crowds Show Up In Chicago Loop, Prompting Police Response

[VIDEO] I got caught up in this on Saturday night. Thankfully I was away from the action as I saw a line of Chicago Police vehicles along Washington Blvd from State to Wabash and then to Michigan Avenue at least. It appeared the focus was near the Christmas tree in Millenium Park.

#AllinIllinois Healthy Holidays to You, Too

[VIDEO] As head head into the holidays we are still during a pandemic. Here is a PSA from the State of Illinois wish you all a healthy holidays.

From the media kit:

This year the holidays are about adapting to keep each other safe, and while we may not be breaking tradition, we are certainly bending it. From socially distant holiday carolers to virtual parties, we’re proving we can still have joy and stay safe, too.

We’re all safer and stronger when we go all in, Illinois.

Got wind of this via Capitol Fax which did a rate the ad type of post on Friday. I think most didn't like this ad, and personally I would've liked won akin to what was shared during the summer about wearing face masks.

Also I must add the guidance provided by the city as far as a stay-at-home advisory and family activities during the holidays within the confines of this pandemic.

This was announced by the mayor's office yesterday.

CapFax: A night of looting in Chicago

Rich Miller is looking into the looting that took place downtown overnight. We get an idea of what was going on and how organized this mayhem was.
I understand that this rash of mayhem started in Englewood with a police involved shooting. Probably will find an article on that later.

NO, not this again!!! Looting downtown overnight

[VIDEO] The last time this activity happened downtown, especially in the last weekend of may in national demonstrations over what happened with George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn - it came here. Peaceful demonstrations great and then came the rioting, vandalism, and looting. Worse still once it happened downtown, it came to the neighborhoods on the west and south sides which are still recovering from them.

I'd say check out the comments in the above video. A lot of people making their own references to who committed the most recent acts of looting and violence downtown. Some of it offensive from some of you.

It lets me know that we really haven't settled down from what happened over two months ago. We're still under some forms of unrest in this city. Granted there were other hiccups such as what happened at a Christopher Columbus statue on the lakefront.

And you know 2nd City Cop had something to say about this and noting that Mayor Lightfoot over the weekend crashed Montrose Beach after a significant group of people congregated there during a pandemic.

I want to share this video from The Hill which often covers what's going on in the US Congress about the chaos from overnight. Even they're paying attention. [VIDEO]
I hate to ask this question, have we started to lose control?

Protests in Homan Square at CPD facility on the city's west side

[VIDEO] The video you see above is from Ghetto News Network - welcome back J-Hustle - showing what happened in Homan Square last night on the west side.

You might have seen this on your local news last night, protests have converged on the west side of the city to protest a Chicago Police detention facility. It's something I have to do more research on, however, it appears there is a history of police abuse of citizens here.

That facility that exists there and it appears to be near the old Sears complex on Homan Avenue, it also doesn't appear to be a police station. At first glance seeing how the protests took up the whole streets on the news last night near this complex I automatically had concerns of a CHAZ situation here in Chicago or even what happened to that police station in Minneapolis, Minn in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.

The Chicago Police had an interesting past week there was a shooting in Auburn-Gresham at a funeral home on 79th Street where reportedly 15 people were wounded and made national headlines. Chicago Police were successfully able to defend a Christopher Columbus statue in Grant Park which was later removed by the city on early Friday morning as a slap in the face to those officer who were hurt in that standoff with the protestors rioters.

At least for the past month - aside from an uptick in shootings and homicides here in the city for most of the past month - things in the city had settled down as far as unrest. I just hope any protests remains peaceful.

Ward 15 Alderman reports another incident of vandalism

[VIDEO] This incident happened on Sunday Alderman Raymond Lopez's (Ward 15) offices were hit with bricks by vandals:

Capitol Fax: Responding to “uptick,” Mayor Lightfoot tightens COVID-19 regulations

I'm very glad that since most of June we've found ourselves in a good place as far as infections or deaths from the coronavirus. The bad news is that lately we've seen upticks of infections throughout the state and also Chicago is a hot spot. So we continue to see efforts at mitigation of the spread of this virus.

Recently a quarantine had been placed in effect where if you've visited a state with an uptick in cases of infection - such as Texas, California, Florida for example - you have to be quarantined for 14 days. Of course the next question with that is how does the city of Chicago enforce this?

In any case, check out this press release from Mayor Lori Lightfoot about further mitigations due to the upticks from CapitolFax.
