Aldermen, businesses say mayor’s Dumpster fee stinks

Sun-Times:
Business groups, condominium associations and aldermen on Friday dumped all over Mayor Daley's plan to charge an annual fee as high as $300 for every one of their garbage dumpsters.

Daley wants to raise up to $9 million during part of 2009 — and at least $25 million in subsequent years — by requiring businesses and condo associations to buy annual permits for their over-sized garbage containers.

The fee would range from $100 a year for containers that hold less than one cubic yard of garbage to $300 for dumpsters with a capacity over 10 cubic yards. It would apply to all commercial dumpsters — even those positioned on private property.

On Friday, the City Council’s Finance Committee held a hearing on the proposal but took no action amid an avalanche of opposition.

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, the LakeView East Chamber of Commerce and the National Solid Waste Management Association joined forces to argue that small businesses struggling to survive in a difficult economy can’t stand the added cost.
