Driving up the price of gas

Tribune:
It was nice while it lasted but the days of filling up the tank for less than $2 a gallon are fading in the rearview mirror.

Gas prices around Chicago and across the nation have risen sharply in the last few weeks, and experts say a combination of investor speculation and fair-weather driving trends are likely to keep them from retreating anytime soon.

Retail gasoline prices in the Chicago area jumped 23 percent in the last month, to just over $2.50 a gallon, and 44 percent since the beginning of the year, when a gallon of regular cost just $1.77 at the pump, according to AAA.

The spike followed a sharp rise in crude oil prices, which briefly topped $60 a barrel on Monday, causing the national average price at the pump to rise 2.2 cents overnight, to just under $2.25 a gallon.
It might be time for some neighborhood gas updates. If you want to see some previous updates check the sidebar for Chatham gas prices.
