Illinois joins effort to update school curriculums

Daily Herald:
The effort, known as the State Leadership Initiative, is being led by the Arizona-based Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which believes changes in the classroom are necessary to prepare students for the global competition that awaits either in college or the workplace. The goal is a curriculum that combines rigorous study of core subjects - math, history, science - with the teaching of "21st century skills" like creative thinking/problem solving, interpersonal communication and global awareness. A state board spokeswoman said the updating process could take up to three years. This is the latest in a series of steps state educators have taken to update teaching and learning standards in Illinois. Earlier this month, for example, the state announced that it will participate in an effort to create national learning standards for math and English.
I'm for it!
