Investigation ends at Burr Oak, few answers for families

Tribune:
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said today authorities have collected about 1,200 pieces of evidence from Burr Oak Cemetery, but they are not able to provide closure to families seeking answers since the scandal was uncovered about a month ago.

The sheriff's office and FBI have been investigating a vacant lot on the Alsip cemetery grounds where they believe remains from some 300 graves were dumped. The gravesites were then resold for profit. Four cemetery workers have been charged in connection with the scandal.

Dart said today that vacant lot still has remains, but authorities are concluding this phase of the investigation because they have enough evidence for their criminal case and there is no need to continue violating the remains that are at the crime scene.

Officials said there will be no DNA testing to identify the remains because it's too difficult of a task, meaning that families who believe their loved ones were dug up and reburied on the lot will never know for sure.
