Mayfair Academy of Fine Arts was established in 1957 by world-renowned tap Master, Mr. Tommy Sutton, who realized the need for a cultural education for the children of his community. Mayfair has since become the largest dance school of its type in the city of Chicago and continues to provide the best possible dance education for the children of its community. Mayfair is currently under the direction of Mr. Sutton’s daughter, who realizes that her purpose is to continue the legacy her father left before her. In 2004 Mayfair expanded with a new location in the Southern Suburbs, Mayfair Academy Too! Mayfair and Mayfair Too provide over 80 classes per week to over 700 students.
Mayfair Academy offers a full schedule of classes from beginning to advanced starting at age 3 through adults. Our registration officially begins in September and our classes run from September through June, at this time our intermediate & advanced students are assigned classes depending on their level. Classes for beginning students are publicly listed.
BALLET
The foundation of the dance development, its techniques develop grace, poise and physical discipline. It is the recommendation of Mayfair that all students interested in studying dance should be enrolled in a ballet class. Ballet will greatly enhance the student’s capability to excel in all areas of dance.
TAP
Mayfair is renown for its excellence in the field of Tap Dancing. The Tommy Sutton method of tap developed through years of experience by Mr. Sutton is taught at Mayfair and is used and imitated at many dance schools throughout the city and country. Tap Dancing promotes the students sense of rhythm and coordination.
JAZZ
Jazz Dance utilizes the discipline and the techniques of ballet and produces an exciting, contemporary dance form as seen on many commercials and media venues. Jazz Dance tends to promote creativity and minimize inhibitions in the development of the student.
HIP HOP
This is the latest dance style inspired by the Hip Hop culture that combines the elements of street dance, jazz, funk and break dancing.
COMBINATION
These classes are mandatory for every student between the ages of 3 and 7. The combination class was created at Mayfair and has proved extremely successful in the dance development of the young child. The basic fundamentals are offered in Ballet, Tap, and Jazz in one class.
