The Roseland neighborhood is home to the Lowden Projects, the wild 100s.He mentions a number of incidents that take place in the areas north of 95th Street and I'm sure some of you reading this blog might be offended by being lumped in with Roseland. So allow me to share a map with you below which is of the Roseland Community area which is a larger area than of what's considered the Roseland neighborhood further south. So another reason why I want to have a map to reference for your benefit.
The Roseland neighborhood by far has one of the best outward physical appearances then most of the other top ten neighborhoods.
Roseland has a decent economic base, good homes and schools, this goes against all the usual arguments of why violence is happening in this neighborhood.

So in response to the cold shoulder by the City of Chicago the task force was introduced. The purpose of the task force is as follows
Determine the causes of violent crime in Englewood and surrounding communities
Determine a comprehensive long term plan of action to substantially reduce violent crime in Englewood and surrounding communities
Make recommendations for laws,programs and initiatives and or money to put the plan of action into immediate effect.
Nine buildings are boarded up in the 5200 block of South Wood Street in Back of the Yards. Mary Washington's home might have become No. 10.So what do you think?
Unable to make her $1,425 monthly mortgage payment, Ms. Washington was facing foreclosure on the two-story shotgun house that she and her late husband bought in 1985. Earlier this fall, she says, she worked out a trial loan modification with her lender that lowered her payment to $617 and allowed her to keep the property.
“I thought about giving up, but everything I had and have I put into this house,” she says. “I would have had nowhere to go but the sidewalk.”
Foreclosure and board-ups are a part of life today on the street that Ms. Washington, 73, says was “just beautiful” when her family moved there from the Cabrini-Green housing project on the North Side.

32nd District State Rep. Andre Thapedi is calling for the Illinois State Police to be sent into at least the two neighborhoods he represents to provide additional law enforcement support. Gov. Quinn so far seems open to sending State Police into Chicago. It does appear however that Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy isn't too keen on the idea. What do you think about this idea?
church and elementary school up until the 1990's. Due to declining enrollment and a dwindling congregation both the school and church were closed and merged with another church outside of Park Manor. The building and adjoining school have been leased to a variety of churches and nonprofits and none have had any long term success at operating.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: NEW LIFE COVENANT ANNOUNCES 2ND There are more than 175 movies-under-the-stars screenings scheduled for Chicago's parks this summer. Most will feature standard Hollywood fare, from "Meet the Parents" at Fulton River Park July 26 to "Shrek Forever After" at Smith Park Aug. 11.
But perhaps the most unique outdoor film festival in the city will take place in July and August on an empty lot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
Here, on an 8-foot-by-8-foot white fabric sheet suspended from a brick wall outside 6918 S. Dorchester Ave., an audience can take in rarely seen nonfiction films from the past, all with Chicago connections.
Over four nights, the free film fest will play films about the thriving blues and jazz scene on the South and West Sides from the 1950s through the 1970s, as well as a documentary about community organizer Saul Alinsky in theWoodlawn neighborhood in the 1960s.
There also is an early 1960s documentary about theVice Lords street gang, and curiosities that range from a 1978 look at the Maxwell Street Market to a 1958 wrestling event at the South Side's International Amphitheatre (a facility that closed in 1999). And for the finale, home movies, some provided by those in attendance, some dating back decades.
The Greater Grand Crossing venue is owned by internationally known artist Theaster Gates. The films are mostly from the Chicago Film Archives, a film restoration group led by Nancy Watrous. The CFA is teaming with Gates' Dorchester Projects group to present the festival.

An elderly couple who authorities described as hoarders were found buried alive under mounds of trash in their South Side two-flat Monday night and may have been there for as long as three weeks, authorities said this morning.
"It (the residence) was packed from floor to ceiling," said Police Lt. Dale Kingsley.
Police conducting a well-being check at the request of a neighbor about 6:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of East 69th Street in the Grand Crossing neighborhood detected an overpowering odor and called the Fire Department to make a forced entry, police said.
A fire official on the scene said couple had not been heard from for three weeks and the 75-year-old woman had injuries that resembled rat bites. Both she and her 76-year-old husband were taken to Jackson Park Hospital in critical condition, but a nurse there said this morning their conditions were improved, although they still were in intensive care.

Two men suffered multiple gunshot wounds at a party in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood early Sunday.
At 2:40 a.m., police responded to two men shot on the 720 block of East 67th Street. One 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and right arm and another 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm, police said.
The shooter is believed to be a 23-year-old man, according to police. The man was involved in a verbal altercation with the two men at a party at the above address, left and came back, shooting the two victims, police said.
One man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition and the other man was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in good condition, police News Affairs Officer Michael Fitzpatrick said.
