The community is helping restore Josephine's!
The Chicago Tribune has reported in today's paper that Josephine's (also known as Captain's Hard TIme Dining), is back in business. They had to shut down due to copper wiring being stolen. Thepaper reported that IBEW Local 134, electric company MZI Group Inc. and ComEd are reworking wires at cost to help restore the business.
The NextDoor Community and Jahmal Cole of My Block, My Hood, My City have been huge contributors to the restoration.
You can still contribute by going to the GoFundMe page from Jahmal Cole. The fund is currently at $5389 of the $10,000 goal, more than half way there. Keep it up, community!

Avalon Regal Thater offering investment bonds
Jerald Gary, the new owner of the Regal Theater on 79th at Stony Island, is offering an investment opportunity for those who want to help resurrect the theater.
This investment includes 10 free tickets (annually) and other perks.
Here is the text from their webpage (located at http://www.regaltheater.org/seatbonds ) which describes the program. The redevelopment also includes the goal of becoming the first theater in the United States with holographic projection technology in addition to entertainment from everyone's favorite artists in R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop and Rap, as well as theater, dance, film, comedy and more
---
Seat Bond Program
The Avalon Regal Theater offers a unique opportunity for the community to invest in its success through the Seat Bond program.
The purpose of this program is to promote self-investment and reduce reliance on government subsidies and other non-market based financing for community development in our neighborhood.
The Seat Bond program includes 10 tickets to performances at the Avalon Regal Theater per year, in addition to invitations to exclusive investor events, VIP access to select shows, the ability to buy tickets to hot shows before they go on sell to the general public, and a named seat in the auditorium. The first class of bond holders will be recognized at the 2017 Grand Opening.
The most important aspect of a Seat Bond is the fact that it is an investment, which means Seat Bond owners are not just patrons of, but investors in this integral part of the community.
Each Seat Bond is a $1,000 investment and includes:
10 tickets to performances per year (does not include private events)
8% return on each $1,000 investment
Return of initial investment after 1 year, with the ability to re-invest
Embossed name plaque positioned on an auditorium seat
Framed Seat Bond Certificate and duplicate name plaque
Annual 1099-INT form for reporting taxable interest income
Individuals or organizations can purchase multiple Seat Bonds. Seats Bonds in the first three rows on the main floor are reserved for VIP members of Singularity and have a $10,000 minimum.
The Avalon Regal will feature entertainment from everyone's favorite artists in R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop and Rap, as well as theater, dance, film, comedy and more. The theater will also be the first in the United States to have holographic technology. This is truly an exciting and historic opportunity for the community.
See the video below for a tour and interview with Avalon Regal Theater owner, Jerald Gary.
Interview: rollingout.com/2017/09/23/avalon-regal-theater-owner-desires-the-communitys-help/
The Seat Bond program is only accessible through this website. Seat Bonds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You cannot choose specific seats for your name plaque and Seat Bonds do not represent seating assignments for events. Seat Bonds are non-transferable.

Celebrating Josephine "Mother" Wade
Josephine "Mother" Wade , owner of Josephine's Cooking (formerly known as Captain's Hard Time Dining), at 436 E. 79th Street, has had a very good week.
This weekend, she was honored with a stretch of 79th street named after her, in an honorary street sign. The event was attended by several community leaders and politicians.
She was also featured in the most recent issue of the African American Tribune (on the cover and a story; the issue is available in many places, such as churches).
Today she was on the morning show on Inspiration 1390 AM with Sonya Blakey. She talked about her history with the neighborhorhood, community involvement. She also noted that she actually wanted to keep the name Captain's Hard Time Dining. Her son, in consultation with others, thought it would be better branding to not have "negativity" (i.e. "Hard time") in the name, though she noted that the name change threw a lot of people off. She also shared th emany connections she has in our city and community.
I (JP Paulus) even called in, and with a short description was able to identify me. (I am not sure if that aired...I called around 8:45 am but didn't hear it in the next hour). She definitely has the gift of connection.
Sonia posted a Facebook live conversation at https://www.facebook.com/Sonya-Blakey-189143197792913/
Mother Wade was in the restaurant shortly after her appearance on 1390AM, and might still be there if you stop by today to wish her Happy Birthday!
Congratulations Mother Wade!

Youth helps lead chairty event at SMG Movie Theater
The following is a press release involves a young man who has helped lead these charity events the past couple of years.
11-YEAR-OLD SAM LOVE TO BRING CHRISTMAS TO ENGLEWOOD AND 2 TORNADO-TORN ARKANSAS TOWNS
Coming to Englewood Dec. 19th
By Chinta Strausberg
Just 9-days before Christmas,11-year-old Samuel Love is bringing his entire Beasley Academic Center school to the 87th Street Studio Movie Grill Chatham Theater, which has partnered with the youth leader for his third annual disaster relief Christmas toy drive, where he will present an adaptive tricycle, to a special needs child.
Sam’s movie day will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 210 West 87th St.. The students are scheduled to arrive at 9:30 a.m. to watch either “The Hunger Games or Madagascar Mockingjay, Part I” movie, according to Sam’s father, Victor Love.
And, at 12 noon on that same day, young Sam will present a tricycle to a special needs child, and he will accept a check from the Black McDonald’s Operators Association for his toy drive.
On Friday, December 19, 2014, Sam will be coming to Englewood at 4 p.m. where he will be distributing toys at the Ogden Park, 66th and Racine.
Besides Englewood, young Sam has chosen Vilonia and Mayflower, Arkansas as the 2014 recipients of the “Sam and Santa” disaster relief Christmas toy drive.
After the Englewood toy give away, Sam will be leaving on December 21st going to Arkansas. On December 22nd, Sam will hold a Christmas party in Vilonia where he will meet the children from that town as well as those affected in nearby Mayflower. His father said he and his son would be joined by both the governor and mayors in a huge Christmas celebration.
Recently Sam held at a press conference at the 87th Street theater along with his father, Victor Love, Venisha White-Johnson, theater manager who is also vice president of Variety of Illinois, Angelique Barthel, Executive director of the Variety The Children’s Charity of Illinois, Will Adams, an independent filmmaker who is showing his film, Sex Ain’t Love at the theater, Reginald Cotton from Charity Contributors of Chicago, Sandi Torres, director of Charity Contributors of Chicago, officer Richard Wooten, Bryant Thompson from Red Level Entertainment and others.
Having thought long and hard about where he would deliver this year’s toys for children who were victims of disasters, young Love said he did his homework well before making his selection.
Sam searched the Internet, made phone calls and reached out to his parents in addition to talking to TV weathermen. “On April 27, 2014, an EF 4 tornado came through Vilonia for the second time in just three years. In 2011, a twister came through flattening homes and businesses. On the same day in Mayflower, the tornado destroyed up to500 homes and killed 16 people.
“It was heartbreaking to seethe damage that occurred there,” young Sam said. “I can only imagine the fear and pain of going through that devastation for the second time. I chose those two towns because the kids deserve to have smiles on their faces this Christmas.”
Before including Englewood as his choices for this year, young Sam rode round that community and was shocked to find out the state of poverty it is in. “We discovered that the population of Englewood is 30,900 with an average income of $12,000 a year. The unemployment rate is 21.3 percent, and the violence rate falls within the top10 hot spots in Chicago.” He noticed numerous vacant lots and said the parks“are in need of improvement.”
“After learning this, I felt the need to help make a kid smile in Englewood even though they may be going through some tough times…,” Sam said. “These three areas need our help. I believe with the help of my city, my family, my friends and others from around the world and even with the President and the First Lady, we can make a kid smile….”
Mr. Cotton brought numerous toys from his organization saying, “It’s an honor to give back to one of the youngest members of our philanthropic community. We give it up to Sam….” Adams donated two remote cars.
Barthel’s organization donated an adaptive tricycle. “We are encouraging families who have a handicapped child to apply for it through this toy drive. It can be powered by a pad with a variety of different disabilities but also by their caretakers.
“Children who don’t have a lot of core strength can still ride a tricycle. It is recreational as well as therapeutic,” she said. “Variety of Illinois is so proud of Sam’s offer and excited to be a part of this year’s event.” To apply for this bike or other mobility equipment at www.varietyofillinois.org. The application deadline is Thursday, December 18, 2014. She is hoping to give the bike on Friday, December 19, 2014, at the theater.
Addressing natural disasters can be emotionally draining even for adults let alone a child. Mr. Love said he received a call from a woman from Livonia, Arkansas who was in tears after learning of Sam’s toy giveaway. “She was excited at learning they were selected to get these toys.”
Mr. Love said the priority of Arkansas city officials there was to “get a roof over their heads and to get back to some normalcy some state of living. Toys were the last thing on their list.”Love added, “There are kids affected by this situation.”
The woman reportedly told Mr.Love that she had four grown children and that “they have nothing.” “It gets really emotional sometimes when you talk to these people because it really makes a difference when you can reach out to them,” he said.
‘This is about kids deserving and ready to feel better on Christmas Day. “I thank God for Sam’s having a heart for kids…. This is what Christmas is all about taking care of the less fortunate,” said Mr. Love.

Christmas tress onsale starting TOMORROW at Williams Hydro Plants.
We wrote about Williams Hydro Plants 2 years ago. We wanted to let you know they are selling Christmas Trees again, in their lot on the NorthWest corner of 79th & Prairie (across from Ruggles School's main playground). Sales start tomorrow, and hours are later (going into the 7pm hour).
Support our local small businesses!
Here's what we said then:
Worlee did a great job on an article about Charles and Belinda Williams of Williams Hydro-Plants a short time ago.
I can personally testify to how friendly and helpful they are. They have also become their unofficial granchildren. (see the photo of the girls with Mr. Williams),
The Williams are selling Christmas Trees starting Saturday, December 1. They will be doing so through the evening (past their closing time of 5pm). We encourage you to buy from them if you use real trees.
Their store is at 311 E. 79th Street Chicago, IL 60619. They will sell the Christmas Trees in their lot across the street at 79th & Prairie, also across the street from the south playground of Ruggles elementary school. Their phone number is (773) 651-3426, so can call ahead and schedule your pickup.
Also, if you have other needs, please contact them. They can have items such as salt and snow melt ready for you out there as well.
Let them know JP Paulus (dad of Mia and Faith) sent you. It won't result in any discount. But it would be great to know connections have been made.

Historical mural unveiled at Burnside Scholastic Academy on Thursday, June 5
Burnside Scholastic Academy is unveiling a mural which recounts protests which led to Burnside becoming an integrated school, and opened the doors for the rest of the Chicago Public Schools system.
The public is welcome to join the school at 9:30am to unveil the mural. Burnside is located at 650 E. 91st place (near 91st & St. Lawrence, behind Tuley Park).
Tony Burroughs, a student at Burnside during the movement, was instrumental in getting the mural established, and work with youth to tell the story.
Carolyn Elaine is the artist who, along the school's art teacher, helped the youth create this mural. Ms. Elaine developed the concept and details.
There is also a surprise for former students who participated in the protest.
Please see the Facebook event page with more details.
We will try to post an update, with more information when available.
Full Disclosure: My daughter is a student of Burnside, and Worlee's child is an alum.
EDIT: Here is the official press release (please excuse the editing -- some problems on our end):

*Project*
A ribbon cutting for a 300 sq ft beautiful broken tile art mosaic mural will be held at Burnside Scholastic Academy on Thursday June 5, 2014 at 9:45am. The mural is dedicated to the historic 1962 sit-in at Burnside. Renowned muralist Carolyn Elaine (www.studioelainemosaic.com <http://www.studioelainemosaic.com/>), designed the mosaic with Burnside students and art teacher Sarah Didricksen. Elaine has designed mosaic murals for many buildings and public art in Chicago. Internationally known genealogist Tony Burroughs (www.TonyBurroughs.com <http://www.tonyburroughs.com/>) conducted workshops with students on Black History and Civil Rights in preparation of the mural design. Burroughs was one of the sit-in students and his mother was one of the organizers.
*Background*
May 17^th marked the 60^th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. The movement to desegregate schools in Chicago began on January 2, 1962 with a sit-in at Burnside Elementary School. It was organized by PTA mothers and was the spark that ignited the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago. Three of the PTA mothers, in their 80s, and four of the sit-in students, in their 60s, plan to be in attendance at the dedication.
The Burnside Sit-In inspired ministers, Civil Rights workers from the NAACP, Urban League and Freedom Riders to support the protest. Momentum grew and inspired mothers at other schools to protest. This lead to The Woodlawn Organization (TWO) and the Coordinating Council for Community Organizations (CCCO) to protest Willis Wagons, temporary mobile classrooms built to relieve overcrowded schools in African American communities. This was led by a young Reverend Arthur Brazier.
CCCO, CORE and the Chicago Friends of SNCC organized a city-wide school boycott the next year on October 22, 1963. Approximately 250,000 students stayed home. It was the largest school boycott in the country. Dr. Martin Luther King said the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago was the most organized movement in the north. King came to Chicago in 1965 to support the fight for education and returned in 1966 to fight for housing and jobs.

Burnside Academy pivotal in School De-Segregation
The Burnside Scolastic Academy's Parent Advisory Council shared this article yesterday which highlighted Burnside's pivotal role in the civil rights struggle.

READ THE WHOLE THING!
It was a pivotal moment for Chicago’s racially separate and unequal Chicago Public Schools system.
But for then 12-year-old Tony Burroughs, the three-week sit-in by African-American parents and students at Burnside Elementary School — 50 years ago this month — was life-changing.
“Historians tend to look at the big picture,” says Burroughs, now 63 and a noted genealogist and author.
“You don’t hear a lot about the small sparks to the fire that ignited the Civil Rights movement. This spark ignited protests against the ‘Willis Wagons’ [portable classrooms] and eventually led to the 1963 citywide boycott of the Chicago Public Schools where 250,000 students stayed home,” he says of the incident that began on Jan. 2, 1962.
Spearheaded by the Burnside Parent Teacher Association — primarily its president Alma Coggs, member Zenia Gray, and Burroughs’ mother, Mary Ellen Burroughs — it fueled the school desegregation movement of the ’60s.
And the protests that followed, according to Chicago Urban League papers the University of Illinois Chicago Library holds in its Special Collections, in turn “focused the city’s attention on racial segregation and inequality, created a new militancy among many Chicagoans, and set the stage for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s decision to move his wing of the national civil rights movement to Chicago in 1966.”
Anyone have any thoughts or memories?

Sun-Times features the Chatham community
In 1986, the Sun Times wrote some articles about Chatham. This series is a sort of update for those articles.
Here's the intro
There are things the good Lord and good black folks just wouldn’t allow in Chatham.Read the full article here.
No barbecuing on the front lawn.
No hanging on corners.
No loud music.
No ball-playing after dark.
No penny-pitching on sidewalks or racket on the street at all hours of the night.
And definitely, definitely no trampling the grass.
The rules in Chatham were never painted on signs. Instead, they’ve long been etched in the hearts of homeowners who live in the neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago bounded roughly by the Dan Ryan Expressway to the west, Cottage Grove Avenue on the east, 87th Street on the south and 79th Street on the north
The series is as follows:
DAY 1: The Changing Chatham – a look back at 20 years of a neighborhood in transition. What do you think of the article? Does it represent us well?
DAY 2: A Class DIVIDE - Chatham isn’t the exclusive community with high property values and picky landlords that it used to be.
DAY 3: The Next Generation Fights for the Future.
