The Future of Chatham Avalon Park Community Council (CAPCC)

The Chicago Neighborhoods
Check out the below essay written by our own Worlee Glover over at NextDoor. Here on this blog we have considered the state of Chatham's community based organizations. I wondered if there are too many organizations as at one point there had been three CBOs in Chatham - CAPCC, GCA, and Reunite Chatham.

Now using Worlee's words you see below, there's be a lack of direction at CAPCC since a whole new regime has taken over. Chatham is a great neighborhood - a bastion of the Black middle-class in Chicago - and well we see RAGE as an organization with a great vision. Perhaps a CBO in a Black middle-class neighborhood needs to take a page out of the book of RAGE who do have a number of successes in recent years.

Beyond that, what do you think of Worlee's essay.

Community press conference regarding Eddie Johnson

A press conference was called today by Richard Wooten, former police officer and current leader of the Gathering Point Community Council and Grater Chatham Alliance, meeting at Josephine’s (formerly Captain’s Hard Time dining

Eddie Johnson was scheduled to appear (after meeting with Wooten and several ministers a few days ago). Unfortunately, Johnson was called into a meeting with Mayor Emanuel as well as having the President come to University of Chicago that day, so he was not in attendance.

Wooten instead used the press conference as an opportunity to express support for Eddie Johnson as permanent Police Superintendent. Wooten was joined by representatives of community organizations from West Chesterfield, Chesterfield, Chatham, Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing and Park Manor as well as 6th Ward Alderman Rod Sawyer and Victor Love & Josephine Wade of the restaurant.

Wooten and others noted that “We are not pleased with the process, but we are pleased with the person.”

Praises for Johnson included how he boosted morale for officers in the 6th district, reduced crime, and instituted “Peace in the Park” program at Cole Park, immediately following the death of Thomas Wortham IV.

Wooten also talked about plans for a Justice Town Hall meeting, especially for the residents of the greater area, in which Eddie Johnson will be invited. Specifics will be determined, pending Johnson’s schedule.

Andrea Watson of DNAinfo was in attendance, so expect a story very soon. Channel 2,5,7 and 32 (local CBS, NBC, ABC, & Fox stations, respectively) were also in attendance, so expect stories today as well, perhaps as early as noon or 4pm .

Reporters asked tough questions such as “How can Eddie Johnson change the culture of ‘Code of Silence’ which has been around for generations”

DNA Info: Chatham Methadone Clinic Meets With Local Group Over Complaints

So the Chatham methadone clinic is in the news once again:
The clinic, Nuway Community Services, 110 E. 79th St., was the subject of a neighborhood meeting in January, where residents complained of clients loitering and littering, which is bringing down the overall quality of the community. Violence is also a concern.

Jerry Davis-EL, a certified alcohol and drug addiction counselor at Nuway, said he has been meeting with a group organized by the Greater Chatham Alliance since April.

Davis-EL said that the clinic has addressed the early morning loitering problem but added that if the community knew the clients better there would be less tension.

“We need to let [neighbors] know these people are human,” he said referring to the clinic’s clients. “We have to show them some love, be transparent and let them know we’re here for them.”

Davis-EL, who has been meeting with Greater Chatham Alliance vice presdent Cee Powell, wants to see a health screening bus as well as a back-to-school drive to benefit the area. He wants to have both toward the end of August.

“My thing is, if you’re in this community, you need to give back; let’s look at the real issue, which is these people need some hope,” Davis-EL said.
Here's hoping some progress will continue to made on this issue. Here's hoping that the community knows more about what this clinic does for their clients.

6th Ward Aldermanic forum set for January 31

While the exact time, and location, has not yet been settled, the Greater Chatham Alliance has scheduled a 6th ward Aldermanic forum to be held on January 31st. The time and location have yet to be determined. We will post more details as their are known.

This forum will be open to the public.  See the bottom of this post for the e-mail announcement. For questions, you may contact Leslie Honore, Greater Chatham Alliance corresponding secretary, for details at (773) 635-6500 or leslie (at) gcachicago.com

Greater Chatham Alliance hosted a similar forum for the 2011 elections, which seemed to be helpful for many people.

Disclosure: the Sixth Ward writer JP Paulus volunteered for the 2011 forum.
Our Aldermanic Forum is set forSaturday, January 31st.

Location is still being finalized! But get ready for it!

You will be able to see all three of the candidates running for office (in alphabetical order) since we are playing fair here: Brian Garner, Alderman Roderick Sawyer and Richard Wooten. No word if Jerry Pierce is on the ballot yet.

This will be your opportunity to hear the issues, insights, and to really assess who can lead our ward for the next 4 years.

We plan to invite the entire 6th ward communities and want this event to be all-inclusive.

Progress IL: Chicago's Chatham Residents Call For Changes To Local Methadone Clinic

Via Progress IL
Former DNA Info reporter Wendell Huston has landed at Progress Illinois. He reported on the protest outside of the Methadone Clinic on 110 E. 79th Street that took place this past Saturday:
A group of Chatham residents pushed back against a South Side methadone clinic, that serves sex offenders and drug users, during a protest Saturday. The South Siders would like to see the facility relocated; and if that doesn't happen, they want increased supervision of the clinic's patients.

Clarence Collins III has lived in Chatham for 22 years and is concerned about the close proximity of the clinic, located at 110 E. 79th St., to nearby schools.

King's Kiddie Kingdom III, a daycare center, is located across the street from the clinic at 207 E. 79th St., and Martha Ruggles Elementary School, 7831 S. Prairie Ave, is just three blocks away.

"That's too close for me. I would not want my children attending a school this close to a clinic that treats substance abusers," Collins said. "We [Chatham residents] have reached out to management on more than one occasion, but have not heard back from them regarding a meeting."

He added that the protest was meant to bring awareness to the growing problem of patients loitering in the neighborhood after leaving the clinic.
Read the whole thing and lets us know your thoughts.

GCA methadone clinic protest postponed & rescheduled

110 E. 79th Street
Got this e-mail from the Greater Chatham Alliance. There was supposed to be a protest on Saturday morning (November 1st) of a methadone clinic @ 110 E. 79th Street but it had been cancelled due to the weather. Here's more information:
  • Due to the inclement weather affecting the Chatham and Park Manor community, the GCA Methadone Clinic Protest for Saturday November 1st has been pushed back a week to Saturday, November 8th.

Cee Powell, the GCA protest march chairperson, has asked that you note this rescheduling announcement for your media calendar.

Again, the protest has been moved to next Saturday starting at 10:00 am at the same location:

    • Chatham Avalon Medical Center
      110 E. 79th street
      10:00 am

Your coverage support is much needed to make the difference between how our community lives and how others make you live. Thank you.
JP posted a reminder of this protest on Friday, but I will repost the e-mail message that he shared on this blog here. The reasons for this protest:

Reminder: Methadone Clinic protest Saturday at 10:30am

Here a re two more reminders we received regarding the protest against the Methadone clinic at 100 E.  79th street. It begins Saturday, November 1 at 10:30am:

here's the Greater chatham Alliance press release:
CHICAGO--Members of the Greater Chatham Alliance Community Organization (GCA), area residents, local educators, parents and business owners will hold a march and rally to demandthat owners of the Nuway Community Services Methadone Clinic, (79th and Michigan), finallyresolve the ever-growing, public nuisance, disturbance and loitering complaints created by their patients receiving treatment.

The demonstration will take place on Saturday, November 1st starting at 10:30 am in front of the Chatham Avalon Medical Center, located at 110 E. 79th street. Area residents from both Chatham and Park Manor, local school educators and parents, and 79th street business owners will discuss how the loitering and disturbance situation has created conflict on the 79th street corridor all the way to 76th street from Michigan Avenue to King Drive).

Residents will discuss examples of morning incidents where methadone patients hide in their backyards or side entrances, or stand in front of their garages and alleys to avoid police detection as early as 5:00 am--one hour before the clinic opens.Ruggles elementary school parents and teachers will cite occasions like naked manfound sleeping in the nearby school park or patients lingering all day on and near schoolgrounds after receiving treatment.

Area business owners will be asked to discuss examples of how ill-tempered patients loiter in their stores, which often lead to confrontations with their staff and customers.

GCA has repeatedly asked to meet with Olajide Solola, President of the Nuway CommunityServices Methadone Clinic, to ask him to provide a patrolling security service that would marshal non-resident methadone patients to leave the area after receiving their treatments.

The organization feels that this would not only be a reasonable and fair negotiated step toavoid patient and resident / business confrontations, but also stem sales by some patientsto other methadone clients in order to buy heroin from local drug dealers who canvass the area.GCA, as a spokesman for the community, will seek other options to help press for the relocationof the clinic if the clinic owners do not provide a comprehensive security patrol.
This one is from Cee Powell, a resident:

Methadone clinic protest November 1st...

Methadone Clinic at 110 E. 79th Street
Information below come from a flyer that was sent to our e-mail recently. Greater Chatham Alliance has been all over this methadone clinic for many years.
  • P R O T E S T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GCA is saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Our community has seen an influx of people that have been loitering on or around homes, in alleys, around blocks and businesses located near 79th Street and on Ruggles school grounds during school hours at recess. They are coming from the Methadone Clinic at 110 E. 79th Street. We have Pleaded with the owner to provide exterior security to monitor their clients and manage them so they don’t come before the clinic opens and urge them to go home and not hang around on the school grounds & businesses after their treatment. HE WON’T COMPLY! But it’s got to stop! JOIN US!

    Saturday November 1, 2014
110 E. 79th Street (in front of clinic)
10:30 am until you decide to leave
    Thank you for your support

GCA Special Event with CTU Pres. Karen Lewis

The event will be held tonight at 6PM at Crerar Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 8100 S. Calumet. We recently did a post about this as we got wind of this through DNA Info and as it turns out it contained the wrong date. We corrected that post to reflect that new information.

As we know Karen Lewis is exploring a run for Mayor of Chicago against her nemesis Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

GCA community forum with Karen Lewis

Karen Lewis is the current President of the Chicago Teachers Union. She was the main opponent of Mayor Rahm Emanuel especially during the teacher's strike of 2012. It's certainly that which is compelling her to consider a run for the mayor's office. This info you will find at DNA Info:
The president of a South Side nonprofit said his organization is bringing Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis to Chatham so its residents, who include a lot of retired teachers, can hear her views on education and her possible run for mayor.

The Greater Chatham Alliance will sponsor a community forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Crerar Memorial Presbyterian Church, 8100 S. Calumet Ave., for Lewis, who said she is strongly considering running for mayor next year.

"Personally, I would vote for her if she decided to run for mayor," said Roosevelt Vonil, president of the Greater Chatham Alliance. "A lot of our residents want to hear Lewis' views on issues like education and crime."
Also noted that in January, GCA hopes to host an Aldermanic forum with 6th Ward Alderman Roderick Sawyer.

BTW, she will not be the only candidate who is coming or at least has come to the South Side. 2nd Ward Ald. Bob Fioretti - in the recent remap he was essentially drawn out of his old ward near downtown - will make an appearance in South Shore as reported by DNA Info. He will take questions at a local restaurant which is hosting this Saturday an "Exchange Ideas" forum.

We will post about events from other candidates, such as Amara Enyia, when information becomes available to us. Please feel free to send us information about mayoral andaldermanic candidates in our area by sending an e-mail to blog ((at)) thesixthward.us

Recap of Townhall Meeting on "Park Manor Inn Hotel Development on 76th State

City of Chicago Planning & Development-Dept, Hedgeman Development, African American Hotel Owners Association for Mr. Higginbottom, development architects and attorneys came out originally to Urban Partnership Bank for a meeting with the residents of #Chatham and #Park Manor to discuss a new updated proposal for what they are terming the "Park Manor Inn. Because of a 200+ turnout the meeting had to be moved to St Dorothy Church to accommodate all the residents. Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer was the facilitator of the meeting.

The developers representative Mr. Price opened the meeting discussing why they wanted to place the Hotel on 76th State and that there were several African American owned hotels in the city which include the Hyde Park Hyatt Regency. My Price was followed by the architect who gave details of the proposal. The hotel that they would like to build is a $10.0 million, 5 story,90 room facility with a fitness and business center, meeting rooms and a full service 100 seat restaurant on the ground level. The architect explained that the building is an all brick building with metal accents and would be in the front of the lot with landscaped parking in the rear. The attorney from Neal & associates stated that the developers need a zoning change from the city council and a special use permit because it is a hotel which is initially approved on the local level. The City of Chicago planning department explained the zoning requirements for the project. Lastly, State Representative Elgie Sims thanked the audience for coming out and being part of the process.

The floor was opened for questions. The questions went across the spectrum. There were those who believed that there was no demand for the facility and that individuals would not wish to stay there because of some articles and television stories by the traditional media. The developer stated that they felt that hey could successfully attract business clients who travel down the Dan Ryan or attending conventions at McCormick. Also, the question came up about Mr. Hedgeman's owning the Barbara Ann and Sportsman's Motels. Mr Hedgeman stated he has not owned the Barbara Ann and that any illegal activities that went on did not happen while he owed it. He also stated that the Sportsmans is in a state of disrepair because he is waiting on TIF funds to do a complete renovation. Mr. Price stated that there were not pursiung the "nighttime motel" market and the rates that are expected to start at $80-$120 will deter that market. Others asked about African American participation asit relates to construction and operations. Mr. Hedgeman stated he plans to work with African Americans from start to finish but would not be specific about which companies he plans to use. Although the attorney present was not African American it was stated he is an attorney at an African American law firm. There were several individuals with hotel management experience who asked some detailed questions on feasibility and payback period. Mr. Hedgeman would not be specific on these issues. The 6th Ward Republican Organization represented by Mr. Darnell Macklin raised concerns about a community benefit agreement and a firm commitment on African American participation in the construction. Also, there were some who questioned why the hotel was not going to be location of a major hotel chain versus being independent.

Of course, we could not have a meeting without grandstanders. While the individuals who are vying to be the next Alderman of the 6th ward were present. One felt being a pompous ass, Community, Families, Friends, and Delton "Jerry" Pierce felt that this was a forum to grandstand and announce that he wants to run for alderman. His statement angered many as well as some of the politicians in the room laughed at his buffoonery and disrespect for the audience. Also, some individuals used this as a meeting to talk about other issues in the ward.

Overall it was a well attended meeting with individuals both pro and con. The presidents of Park Manor Neighbors, Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, Chesterfield Community Council and Greater Chatham Alliance were all present and they and their respective organizations will all have additional meetings and inform Alderman Sawyer whether their organizations feel that the project should move forward or die.

REMINDER: Two events for Saturday

To start Greater Chatham Alliance July meeting with 6th District Commander Fred Waller on Saturday from 11 AM to 2 PM at St. Mark United Methodist Church @ 8414 S. St. Lawrence. GCA wants the community to come to the meeting to provide important intelligence to the Commander and show that the community cares about making their part of the city safe. I will refer to this early post I did for this event, and hopefully you would attend to share your concerns with Commander Waller.

Also, the West Chesterfield Community Association Block Part will also be on Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM @ 9351 S. Michigan Ave. These two events almost overlap but you can always attend this event before you meet with Commander Waller or afterwards. You can also take a look at this earlier post for this event.

Here's hoping Saturday is a very productive, safe, and enjoyable day!
