Standing water at Abbott Park

After today's heavy rains this is how Abbott Park at 95th & Michigan had fared earlier this afternoon. After the heavy snow melts and with heavy precipitation it seems prone to standing water in the grassy areas of the park. And standing water on the sidewalks surrounding the park.

Looks like we're finally getting our thaw in the weather

[VIDEO] As you see in the video above from CBS 2 Chicago, city officials are keeping an eye on the melting snow and ice. Also rain is expected tomorrow further washing away the snow that has been on the ground for the past month.

Also when the snow and ice melts thanks to the warm temps and the rain all the result water has to go somewhere and unfortunately could cause flooding in the area. City officials are getting ready for any expecting issues.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel joked about the change in the weather. He's suggested to his underlings that they watch the coming Noah movie urging them to come up with a plan for the melting snow.

In addition to patching up the streets that have taken a beating this winter, now it's time to clear up all the catch basins and storm drains so that the water will be cleared from city streets. At least that's the plan from the city for all this water we're going to see.

At least we're finally getting a taste of spring! :)

But with last night's rain, our basement received the worst flooding in the 4 years we have lived here. Did that happen to anyone else? Or could this problem have been prevented if the sewer work was completed? Or was it just a bad rainstorm?

EDIT: my wife informed me of power outages at 87th Street (including manual traffic control) and at stores such as the strip mall at 83rd & State Street. How have you been affected?

Flood Assistance

The City of Chicago has begun the process of applying for flood assistance from the Federal government, and we need residents’ help.

To provide a complete damage assessment to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), please fill out the posted form.

Instructions are provided to make this as easy of a process as possible.

Residents can download the form online and email it back to flood2010@cityofchicago.org.

Residents can also call 311, and an operator will assist you with completing the form over the telephone. Completed forms can be emailed, or dropped off at your local Aldermanic office.

Residents who do not have access to a computer can visit anyone of the Chicago Public Libraries to download the form.

As always, if residents have any questions, we encourage you to call 311.
