Jewel Opens Small-Concept Store

CPR:
Jewel-Osco is opening a new grocery store in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood today. But it's not what you think.

The store is about a fourth the size of a typical supermarket. And that's just the point. Miguel Alba is the director of public affairs for Jewel.

ALBA: We're responding to the urban lifestyle, the busy commuter lifestyle.
They don't shop like traditional suburban shoppers.

Food industry consultant Neil Stern says other companies have recognized the same shopping patterns.

STERN: We're starting to see across the country a number of retailers start to build smaller formats and small size stores.
Now perhaps they can open one of these in that former Food Basket location on 87th Street. It's probably too close to the one already on 87th. The only point is they should dot some of these "food desert" neighborhoods.
