Mayor rejects call for second worker on crews

In light of the story from earlier this week of a city worker getting shot for "booting" a car from the Sun-Times:
Mayor Daley said Wednesday the shooting of a city booter was an isolated incident and that booters will continue to work alone despite safety concerns.

"We had one incident, unfortunately," Daley said at a press conference at Morgan Park High School, 1744 W. Pryor. "We haven't had many incidents like that at all."

But for the families of city booters, any shooting is too many, said Carmen Saldana, whose husband, Luis, was injured when he was shot booting a car in April 2004.

"The city of Chicago needs to provide employees as much safety as possible," Saldana said. "If they need to add another person to the crew, they need to do that."

She said she's scared someone will be killed before the two-person crew is restored.
"What will it take?" she said, her voice cracking. "These booters are human beings."
I think I'm with Mrs. Saldana on this!

On a related notes a commentary from the Sun-Times: Booters just do their jobs, treat them with decency.
