Willie Wilson gives away cash at church on Sunday

Willie Wilson said he handed out a whole lot of money Sunday at a South Side church — a couple hundred grand, in fact.

But he insists that’s nothing new. And he said Sunday’s event, attended by Gov. Bruce Rauner, had absolutely nothing to do with his run for mayor. However, it’s already raised more than a few eyebrows on the campaign trail.

“Gov. Rauner attended a Sunday service at the New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church as a guest of Rev. Stephen Thurston,” Will Allison, a spokesman for Rauner’s campaign, said. “The governor has attended Sunday services at different churches across Illinois since he first ran for office, and other elected officials and community leaders are often present.”

The Dr. Willie Wilson Foundation promoted Sunday’s event at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church as “one of the biggest property tax relief assistance” events of the year. On its Facebook page, the foundation said Wilson would be “giving away $300,000 to struggling homeowners.”

In the end, Wilson told the Chicago Sun-Times he gave away closer to $200,000 in checks and cash. In a phone interview, he called it “a normal thing for me.”

“We’ve been paying people’s property taxes for years,” Wilson said, adding that the money was also meant to help people pay for smaller expenses, like food or bus passes.

Gov. Rauner is in a tough re-election fight and if you read Capitol Fax the gubernatorial race is predicted to be a likely Democrat pick-up based on a national political newsletter. Although we have a long way between now and November to see the match-up between the incumbent Governor and his Democrat opponent JB Pritzker.

Concerned Citizens of Chatham: What to do this weekend?

Worlee notes seven events, two of them are ongoing events. There are two back to school events to be shared here hosted by a local church and by the West Chesterfield neighborhood.

 West Chesterfield's their back-to-school event from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday at their community center 9351 S. Michigan Ave. Rev. Michael Pfleger is the keynote speaker with appearances by the Principal of Harlah High School and 6th Ward Ald. Roderick Sawyer.

Also on Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM New Covenant MB Chicago located will host their own back-to-school fest to take place in the church's parking lot at 77th & Cottage Grove. It will feature free school physicals, dental check-ups, book bag giveaways, etc.

And of course those are not the only events taking place this Saturday. Refer to Worlee's posting!

Black Baptists pledge $50 million for Haiti

Committed to keeping the needs of Haiti in the spotlight, an unprecedented alliance of five black Baptist organizations has pledged to raise $50 million to rebuild the Caribbean nation after the devastating January earthquake.

The African-American Baptist Mission Collaboration, which includes the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America, Progressive National Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention of America, National Baptist Convention, USA and Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, unveiled its ambitious initiative at New Covenant Baptist Church on Chicago's South Side on Tuesday.
Rev. David Emmanuel Goatley, executive secretary-treasurer of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, an international mission agency of black Baptist heritage, said he believes the nation's 50,000 Baptist congregations will have no difficulty meeting the financial goal even as donations to relief agencies have slowed down nearly two months after the earthquake.
"African-Americans are generous people and they rise to the occasion," he said. "We are confident that given the opportunity and given the avenue to move resources that our people will respond. Hopefully this will be a catalyst."

Just a note: as far as i can tell, the Southern Baptists are not a part of this effort. They do have an organization, Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship, which last time i chekced, was predominantly African-American.

Church service for those affected by Burr Oak situation

Just heard this in church...

New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church is supposed to have an evening service today for those who have had trauma & hardship due to the Burr Oak situation.

They said it would be today at 5:30 pm

I am unable to find more info on it on the web.
