[AUDIO] Recently we received two e-mails from the Wooten campaign for 6th ward alderman above is an ad that you may have heard on the radio. The other is an article from DNA Info which featured students being honored by Richard Wooten's Gathering Point Community Council.

A flyer for a Cook County judicial candidate

Some of us got some flyers hanging on our doors and gates. The flyer you see above was attached to a door hanger that advertized candidates for Water Reclamation District, however we shall see that sometime in the future.

This flyer is for a judicial candidate, you see Neville vacancy on the flyer however most of us who are unfamiliar with the judicial system in Cook County probably has no idea what this means. Well according to the blog For What It's Worth, William "Bill" Raines is seeking a countywide judicial office.

JP noted on the FB page that current 4th District County Commissioner Stanley Moore has several opponents on the ballot for next months primary election. Here's a flyer for one of his opponents - Mr. Nick Smith. You might know him from the Roseland Heights neighborhood where he was the past president of the community association and I do believe he was also associated with former 6th Ward Alderman Freddrenna Lyle. Flyer for state representative candidate Paul Gregoire

Paul Gregoire is a police officer running in the 34th District race for State Representative. He is one of two police officers running for that State Representative seat with the other being Richard Wooten. This flyer like the one for Bobby Joe Johnson was on a table that contained plenty of campaign literature and signs at this month's GCA political forum.

Below is a leaflet that was attached to that very flyer. It's interesting that he noted his position on marijuana. He's in favor of decriminalization particularly for medicinal purposes.

Clean up on Aisle 81!

 

It's been only a day since the election, so i should give the campaigns time to recover from their parties.

But there is a lot to clean up. These photos were taken on 81st ST. and St. Lawrence, and signs form both were put up all along 81st (as well as throughout the ward). This was Wednesday at noon.

The Sawyer campaign certainly can recycle these for next season, and Lyle's campaign could perhaps also find a use for their signs as well.

Now it's time for us to unite as a ward....

Campaign test -- 1 week results.

On Monday Feb 7 (Monday after the blizzard), my wife and i began an experiment. We either sent e-mails or left voice messages asking each of the 6 campaigns to send us material to help us determine if we should vote for them. The separate requests either asked for the material to be sent to our home, or to a 60619 P.O. Box.

We received 2 e-mail acknowledgements, and a promise that material would be sent soon. This was from Cassandra Goodrum-Burton and Brian Sleet.

But as of Wednesday afternoon, neither the P.O. Box or our home mailbox had any specific mail form the campaigns. We did receive material, but it looks like it was part of the registered voter database. There didn't seem to be anything specific to us (i.e. it's like no one took the time to make sure we had everything to help us in our decision).

Now, it COULD be a problem with the post office...a Medill School of Journalism (Northwestern University) grad student will be publishing a story on our recent problems with the post office...but after all this time, can just the post office be blamed? Is it true that none of the campaigns actually sent us the material we asked?


In 2007, i had varied responses:

Fredrenna Lyle's office had a packet dropped off at our door within days, which included newspapers articles, brochures, etc. (This was after either a call or e-mail)

Karin Norington Reeves conversed with me via Facebook

When I stopped by Eugene Davis' campaign office, they only had an old newspaper with an article. I left my contact info, and found out that they had signed me up to be a volunteer -- thought at that point, i simply wanted to LEARN more about him as a candidate.

I received no response from Thelma Andrews.

For 2011, I was hoping to get a better response...not a "no response"

Check out this mailer from Ald. Lyle...

It's a huge mailer and not something I could have scanned as my scanner can't render a document not much larger than 8x12. So I had to settle for only this one page. A shame too because inside the mailer is a map of the 6th Ward with many of Ald. Lyle's accomplishments and where they took place whether we're talking about schools, streetlights, or curb/gutter repair. The listing you see was cropped from the page you will see below.

All of those businesses are in place indeed we have several McDonald's and Burger Kings here in the 6th. Fresh Produce Grocery, I'm assuming, is in fact Fresh Family Foods near 95th & King Drive. Of course Fresh Family Foods is owned by Quench I Love Food Group who also owns the Quench restaurants in addition to Five Loaves Breakfast Cafe which is across the street from the Alderman's office near 75th & King Drive

But on thing I find curious, Garrett's Popcorn coming in summer 2011? Very cool to know that in the near future I no longer have to go downtown for caramel/chesse popcorn mix. There must be more about this although preferably not more news in the form of a campaign mailer.

Either way interesting to know that Garrett's is coming to a neighborhood location, but then the next question is where?

VIDEO: Sleet in the 6th Ward

Brian Sleet describes the 6th in the speech for this video as a "collection of safe neighborhoods with middle-class values". Also he says the 6th embodies the "entrepreneurial spirit of self-reliance and economic independence" as well as being "proudly a high voter turnout and anti-machine ward". This video also show scenes from throughout the 6th along such streets as King Drive, 87th, 83rd, and 75th Streets. Duration is at least 3 minutes. What are your thoughts on this video?

This video was based upon the written version I found at Wooten's campaign website over the weekend. There are videos from his campaign for this ward's other neighborhoods as well.

Cassandra Goodrum Burton ad

She talks about her plans if she was to win the Aldermanic seat for the 6th Ward.

EDIT: I'm with her on the opportunity for business development on the site of the former Kennedy-King College Campus. That is a great opportunity for commercial development.

It seems she's confident that she has beaten the petition challenges to her in this 32 second clip. Rulings have not been made for her however. And as for her campaign website she plugged in this video, it's time for an update or a redesign. Can't point anyone to a website that doesn't have much on it anyway. If nothing else just set up a blog here at Blogger. Free advice I promise.

Rahm Emanuel visted Chatham

UPDATE 11:13 AM - CAPCC Blog reports that Emanuel was at Izola's this morning!

Just saw this from AP News.

Emanuel, who stepped down as White House chief of staff last week to run for mayor of Chicago, appeared at an elevated train station on Roosevelt Road on the city's near South Side, shaking hands with commuters.

Emanuel plans at least two other stops Monday morning — in the city's Chatham neighborhood and then in the Pilsen neighborhood.

In a video released over the weekend, he said he would embark on a "Tell It Like It Is" listening tour of the city.

Sorry we didn't weren't able to get any specific info (i.e. the restaurant...guessing it's either Izola's or Army & Lou's..maybe Captain's Hard Time Dining), or ahead of time (in case you were interested).

Quinn campaign video

Ald. Lyle is in this video featuring Pat Quinn signing a new gun bill into law right at Cole Park on Monday.

Mayor Richard Daley, Gov. Pat Quinn and a host of other Democratic politicians gathered Monday at a South Side park to boast of a new law mandating prison time for gun-toting thugs -- but ended up facing a barrage of questions about whether they are doing enough to combat crime.

The setting, Cole Park in the Chatham neighborhood, was chosen because Chicago police Officer Thomas Wortham IV recently was gunned down outside his parents' nearby home. The suspects are young men, including one who Daley said was recently paroled on the kind of gun charge targeted by the new law.

The Daley-backed law, signed by Quinn at the park, sets a minimum sentence of one year in prison for someone convicted of carrying a loaded handgun without a state firearm owner's identification card. Previously, probation was possible.

The event was planned in part to honor Wortham, but it took on even more significance after Sunday's fatal shooting of uniformed off-duty Officer Michael Bailey two miles away in another middle-class, 6th Ward neighborhood battling violence.

So the 2010 gubernatorial contest has reached the Chatham neighborhood. This time with Pat Quinn taking on the issue of crime. Bill Brady last fall was on the issue of jobs when he visited Chatham Market, the site of the proposed Chatham Wal-Mart.

Information on the First (1st) Congressional district race

I don't really like it, as it's clearly biased toward liberal candidates.

Adams is facing incumbent Bobby Rush in the November General election.

If anyone has any additional information on Jeff Adams or any political candidates in the upcoming eleciton, we would appreciate it.

Please refer to a previous post lamenting the lack of choices we seem have locally for elections.

The incumbents may be worthy of re-election, but it's hard to measure their effectiveness and contentment (or lack thereof) of the different parts of our community without a choice.

An absolutely Democratic area without real democracy is ironic, to say the least.
