Tuesday is election day

However, you can still early vote if you're still concerned about the pandemic. Or if you choose a Main-In ballot you can drop it off at an early voting location. Concerned Citizens of Chatham has all the city's early voting locations & there are drop off places at city libraries also.

I shared a listing of early voting locations earlier this month where I list locations in Wards 6, 9, and 21. And as far as local libraries listing in Worlee Glover's posting I will share some nearby ones you can drop off your mail in ballot. It doesn't include that new Whitney Young Library Branch, unfortunately.

  • Greater Grand Crossing Library, 1000 E. 73rd St
    Sun., Closed; Mon. & Wed., Noon-7; Tue. & Thu., 10-5; Fri. & Sat., 10-5
  • Thurgood Marshall Library, 7506 S. Racine Ave
    Sun., Closed; Mon. & Wed., Noon-7; Tue. & Thu., 10-5; Fri. & Sat., 10-5
  • Mount Greenwood Library, 11010 S. Kedzie Ave
    Sun., Closed; Mon. & Wed., 10-5; Tue. & Thu., Noon-7; Fri. & Sat., 10-5
  • Sherman Park Library, 5440 S. Racine Ave
    Sun., Closed; Mon. & Wed., Noon-7; Tue. & Thu., 10-5; Fri. & Sat., 10-5
  • Woodson Regional Library, 9525 S. Halsted St
    Mon. - Thu., 9-8; Fri. & Sat., 9-5; Sun., 1-5
  • West Pullman Library, 830 W. 119th St
    Sun., 1-5; Mon & Wed., Noon-7; Tue. & Thu., 10-5; Fri. & Sat., 10-5
Why did I place Woodson library in bold. It's a very convenient location by public transit or even by car. Not to say the others listed are less convenient as your circumstances may be different.

Just bear in mind polls are open on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, 2020.

WGN: Reports on early voting at Deneen Elementary School

[VIDEO] Yesterday WGN news was at the Ward 6 early voting site at Deneen Elementary School located at 7257 S. State St. BTW, did Julian Crews pronounce Deneen correctly? Can someone who has attended that school say for certain?

Anyway Crews noted in his report that while things were moving smoothly for the most part throughout the city, there were technical issues at Deneen and as a result there were lines as you saw in this report. People were getting out here and one person Crews spoke to was correct to say we had to fight for our right to vote.

And as another man stated in this report, it doesn't matter who you vote for just vote. He's right. Early voting continues through Nov. 3rd.

If you want to vote early I blogged about it on Tuesday.

Early voting starts tomorrow

We will have a different election than we had in our history so far. This is due to the ongoing pandemic as the rage for now is to vote by mail instead of voting in person or even waiting until Election Day and going to your local precinct which is what I plan to do.

On Oct. 14, 2020 - tomorrow on Wednesday - early voting around the city will begin. You can register and cast your ballot at designated locations within all 50 wards and at the Loop Super Site located at 191 N. Clark St. or at Clark/Lake.

Here are the locations for wards 6, 9 & 21

  • Ward 6 - Deneen Elementary School, 7257 S State St.
  • Ward 9 - Curtis Elementary School,  32 E 115th St.
  • Ward 21 - Turner - Drew Language Acad.,  9300 S Princeton Ave.
These are the operating hours for early voting until Election Day Nov. 3, 2020 for all sites throughout the city and at the Loop Super Site

  • Early Voting sites in all 50 Wards - plus the Loop Super Site
    Monday-Friday - 8:30 am-7 pm
    Saturday-Sunday - 9 am-5 pm
    Election Day, Nov. 3 - 6 am-7 pm
Here's a notice from Ward09.com - Ald. Anthony Beale's constituent webpage about the early voting at Curtis Elementary on 115th Street

If you want more information check out the Chicago Board of Elections page on Early Voting.

Tomorrow is election day...

Right now I'm recognizing that when many of us go to the polls on Tuesday we're voting in what I see as a polarizing election. In this part of the city many of us will vote for the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a minority will vote Trump and another minority still will vote for either a Green Party candidate or a Libertarian Party candidate.

Unfortunately we have something resembling a horse race election with the Presidential race and it's important to note because it's at the top of the ballot. A lot of people will turn out because of who's running at the top of the ballot. Question about tomorrow is whether or not either major party candidate can engender significant turnout.

BTW, often on this blog we want to encourage people to go out and vote. We are non-partisan so it's not very important at least for me to say vote Republican or Democrat. For me I very much hope that you don't just vote according to your respective party, just for the right person for the job.

Either way one thing this blog has often hoped to do is provide you with the information to allow you to go to the ballot box to make the right choice. More likely we do that in time for the aldermanic races more than we do for a gubernatorial race or presidential race. Which doesn't make those races and down ballot races less important.

Either way thanks for those of you who have voted early and we encourage you to go out tomorrow and vote. You may be free to just sit home and not cast a ballot and that does serve the purpose of sending a message. At the same time going out to vote also sends a far stronger message.

Whoever wins the Presidency let's remember while a lot can happen during a four year term, it's still a four year term. In 2020, we get to do it all over again. That's true on the state level and at the city level although in different years.

Either way again we encourage you to vote on Tuesday. As always for those of you who follow this blog thanks for reading.

Election news tidbits in the Chatham area

Here are some random election tidbits/observations from JP Paulus

1) The Brookins campaign just dumped a trailer with campaign signs in the middle of the street at 83rd & LaFayette. This was Saturday, April 4 at 10am. The Chicago Election Board says it's out of their jurisdiction (only within 100 feet of polling place).

Brookins traile rin MIDDLE of the street at 83rd & LaFayette.

 2) For weeks, Bob Fioetetti's office at ~319 E. 79th Street had Fioretti signs up. But once Fioretti endorsed Rahm Emanuel, the signs suddenly came down. Interesting timing.

3) All 51 early voting sites were open on Sunday. However, this was not advertised very well. The "primary" only had 5 sites open. I had assumed the same 9as did many others), and checked early Sunday morning to verify those site addresses, and found out the change. I tried texting several pastors, and Greater Instituional AME church with Pastor Walter Johnson responded by sending a bus of voters to Whitney Young Library. The judges there had noted how parse it was Sunday, with the exception of the church.     Rev. William Hall of St. James Lutheran had also texted back, but not sure if he was able to mobilize parishioners. As a side note, I hope they do attempt the Sunday early voting at all sites next year. The corner of King Drive hand 79th (Whitney Young) has over 100 churches within a mile radius, according to Mapquest. If just 5 per church came out to vote, there would be 500 voters for site, at least.

4) For weeks, there were a handful of mayoral signs in lawns, mostly for Rahm (at least in the Chatham area).  This past week saw many more for Garcia...mainly on streets like King Drive, and volunteers at the El stations. We'll see what effect, if any, they have had on the mayoral vote.

Sun-Times: Your guide to voting early in April 7 runoff

According to the Sun-Times as of today you're able to vote early for the April 7, 2015 runoffs. This affects the whole city because of the mayoral contest and if there was a runoff in your ward then this affects you as well. I'm looking at you in wards 16 & 21 especially.

Regardless the Sun-Times lists all the early voting sites around the city. Early voting ends on April 4, 2015

Voters don't need a reason or excuse to use Early Voting -- but voters do need to present government-issued photo identification.

Ballots cast in Early Voting are final. After casting ballots in Early Voting, voters may not return to amend, change or undo a ballot for any reason. It is a felony to vote more than once -- or to attempt to vote more than once -- in the same election.

It may be in a different ward although the remap is only being utilized for the 2012 elections.

Early Voting - A Sixth Ward view

Just wanted to write a brief entry on Early Voting in the 6th Ward.

On Saturday, my family wen tto Early Vote at Whitney Young Library at 2:10pm. Since it was a bit chilly outside, they had the line snake around the inside of the library. The line started by the aquarium, went past the south tables. We entered at edge of the children's section.

A couple of people saw the line, and the wait, and decided to leave. But many others stayed, so that the line strectched past the children's section.

We waited 2 hours from the beginning of the line until we actually voted. It was certainly inconvenient (we missed 1/2 of a Halloween party for my daughter's friend), but everyone had a good attitude about the wait, and it was gratifying to see so many people come out to vote. There were at least 2 or 3 first time voters who came out, and there was some small cheers that were heard.

Note: we will update this entry with actual statistics, when available.

Do YOU have a sotry about Early Voting? Please share it! We also welcome links to photos showing you with your early voting receipt.

Whether it's early voting at Whitney Young or at any of the other 50 locations, or at your designated polling place on the actual Election Day, PLEASE VOTE.

Early Voting started, and write-in vote options

Monday was the beginning of Early Voting in Chicago, and it runs until Saturday November 3. You can vote Monday-Saturday, 9am -5pm in 51 locations. On Sunday, October 28, there are 3 locations you can vote (though somewhat far from the 6th and 9th wards).

The 6th Ward's location to vote is the Whitney Young Library, 7901 S. King Drive. The 9th Ward's location is Palmer Park, 201 E. 111th Street. However, you may vote at any of the other 49 sites (and those from outside the ward, but within Chicago, may vote at Whitney Young).

More information on Early Voting from the Chicago Board of Elections website.

According to that website, the 6th ward was #6 among the early voting locations with 419 voters, 9th ward was # 15 with 350 voters. Mt. Greenwood Park (which is one of the 3 Sunday locations) had the 2nd most with 494 voters. The Chicgao Board of Elections (also a Sunday voting location) had 1,741 out of the total 15,711 votes cast in the city.

In addition, there a few candidates who have registered with the Chicago Board of Elections to run as write-in candidates for several offices, particularly a few for our area.

Early Voting line at Whitney Young Library on Monday, 8:59am.
Here is their info:
  • Darnell B. Macklin of 7927 S. Eberhart Chicago 08/22/12 =  State House of Representatives 34th
  • Xavier (X) Roman of 10749 S. Ewing Av. Chicago 08/29/12 = State Senate 17th
  • John Hawkins of 4531 S. Spaulding Av. Chicago 09/06/12 = U.S. Congress 1st
The full listing of write-in candidates for Chicago is here.

As we know, living in this city, many offices are essentially decided during the Democratic primary, and voting in the general election is basically a formality.

People may choose not to vote for an office as a sign of protest. But that will not register with voting results -- 90% of voters could choose not to vote for an office, but if there is no challenger, the results could register as 100% of the people voted for a candidate. This is important info, not just for challengers, but the incumbent as well. Without something to contrast, he incumbent wouldn't know what parts of their district have concerns. Some of those anti-incumbent votes will include people who would automatically vote against teh establishment, but there might be a portion that have legitimate concerns.

Thanks to everyone who has voted already. If you have not, whoever you decide to vote for, PLEASE VOTE!

Early voting begins October 22

Check this listing of early voting sites via Ward Room throughout the city starting on October 22nd. Be advised that many of these sites are based on the new ward map approved in January of this year. So many of you may be voting in the 9th or 8th wards instead of the 6th ward for example. You might want to contact the Chicago Board of Elections if you have any questions.

6th Ward run off early vote

As reported by CPR in a table at the link through Wednesday there have been 1077 early votes cast so far in the run off race between Ald. Lyle and Roderick Sawyer. Here's a brief paragraph:
Another aldermanic race getting a lot of attention is the the 6th Ward on the South Side, where Ald. Freddrenna Lyle faces a challenge from the son of former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer. In excess of a thousand early ballots have been cast in that election.
Early voting continues through March 31st, and the run-off election will commence on April 5th.

Last day of Early Voing is tomorrow (Thursday)!

Just a quick reminder -- tomorrow is the LAST DAY to early vote.

In the 6th ward, you may do so at Whitney Young Library, 7901 S. King Drive, from 9am - 5pm.

My wife and I voted there today. The staff there was VERY nice and encouraging. The turnout on Wednesday was pretty slow, but it made voting that much easier.

There is a designated area where candidates and supports may NOT pass. On Wednesday we saw Rod Sawyer and his supporters, as well as supporters of Rich Wooten and Fredrenna Lyle just outside of the zone, vying for votes.

Also note, ANY resident of Chicago, whether from the 50th to 1st, can vote here at Whitney Young. So bring a friend and/or co-worker!

If you have any questions on voting, contact the Chicago Board of Elections

Election Report from Ruggles School

A quick report from Ruggles....

It was slow when we went, as far as the day was concerned. AT 1pm, there had only been about 49 people who voted.

There were 8 machines for our side of the gym (another precinct had the other side of the gym). However, only ONE (1!) had the touch screen...the rest were the optical scanner. It seems strange that we don'tmore touch screen machines...weren't these supposed to be the new thing?  Anyone prefer the paper ballot?

There were about 7 people voting, including my down the street neighbor and her husband.(We didn't get a chance to talk, unfortunately).

The judges were friendly and not yet weary, though expecting it.

Signs were in front of the school near the office, but away from the Gym entrance where the election was actually held.

Nothing special, but nothing bad either. (In Rogers Park, Bernie Stone's people tried to steer us to voting for him; no shenanigans here).

What was your experience voting?

Monday, February 1, 2010

Don't forget about voting for judges.

Just a reminder of an older post about voting for judges, with some good advice in the comments.

Also, they suggested the site http://voteforjudges.org/ to help you determine who other lawyers thought were qualified judges.

One of the races in particular, Linnae Bryant vs. Thaddeus Wilson, that idea is in dispute. (This is the race where , whoever wins, a Chathamite in be on the bench; i may post some thoughts on this race later....)

At a Greater Chatham Alliance meeting, Bryant argued a case against using them, citing that she thought they were unfair, especially for our community.  Wilson acknowledged that you can't always trust them, but noted that there are at least 2 African American bar associations, and having unanimous approval of all 11 Chicago Bar associations is significant.

It's up to you to make the call.

How did it work for you?
